This article touches on the MSC’s announcement of the delayed implementation of Fisheries Standard Version 3.0. Following the announcement numerous European seafood producers have expressed concern over the complexities involved. The introduction of additional requirements, notably the Evidence Requirements Framework (ERF), has prompted skepticism among producers, with Tor Bjorklund Larsen from the Norwegian Fishermen’s Association questioning whether it aims to “improve the rest or torture the best?”. Particularly for fisheries reliant on certifications for exports, like the Faroe Island saithe species, the new MSC standard poses apprehensions for the industry. Given the MSC’s prominent role in certification schemes, industry experts advocate for flexible and business-friendly approaches to standards. With the MSC evaluating Version 3.0 and an independent review of the ERF underway, fisheries eagerly await outcomes that ensure stability and predictability.
