On March 5 a roundtable event named “Keeping the North Atlantic Blue Whiting fishery MSC and IFFO RS certified” has been organized. One source feels it could be critical to the question of Marine Stewardship Council certifications across pelagic fish.
As previously reported, Northeast Atlantic mackerel saw its MSC certificate suspended in 2019, while Atlanto-Scandian herring is next in line to potentially suffer the same fate without an agreement between fishing nations on how to split quotas between them. Blue whiting — caught by the same countries, in the same waters — does not yet have a deadline for suspension, but is in just the same position.
