The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is widely regarded as the leading fisheries certification standard, with significant recognition from retailers, restaurants, seafood companies, and consumers. However, recent criticisms have emerged regarding the effectiveness and attainability of its sustainability standards. The release of its version 3 sustainability standard has faced backlash for being overly challenging to meet, while also being criticized by NGOs for being too lenient. Despite these challenges, the MSC continues to maintain its prominence in the industry, generating substantial revenue from logo licensing. However, there are indications that its growth may be slowing amidst a rapidly changing landscape of sustainability concerns.
