The FAO revealed that some 34.2% of global stocks in 2020 are overfished and “biologically unsustainable”, a level that has increased by 3.3% since 2018. However, the fraction of fish stocks, by number, that are fished at a biologically sustainable level has decreased from 90% in 1974 to 65.8% in 2017.
MSC chief executive Ruper Howes says he sees encouraging signs despite this.
